Characters: Who are the main characters that we meet in this part of the book? What did you learn about them?
Lizzy is the main character. She loves her adopted family: Moses, Saran and Joshua. She likes Lem. She is obedient and afraid of getting whipped. She represents the attitude of a typical slave at that time. Lizzy wants the nice things that freedom can give her (clothes, fun experiences.)
Joshua is looking for Neelah (his wife). He has a strong personality. He's older--40 to 50 years old. He wants to be free from slavery and doesn't want to have to work for the White man. He wants his own land. He wants equality and respect.
Lem is Joshua's nephew. Lem wants freedom.
Setting: What is the historical significance of when and where this chapter takes place?
This is the time period of slavery. The Civil War is happening. During this time of slavery, the slaves were forced to work 18 hours in the plantation and these slaves were a white man's property. Also, The Civil War is happening, this is when the North & the South fought, it is related to slavery because the North do not need slaves to do work to earn money because they have factories but in the South they need slaves to work in the plantation for them to earn money.
Plot: What happened in the chapter? Summarize the events.
She had to run away from the plantation because when she was giving water to Lem in the middle of the night, Mr. Joe Haynes caught her. He thought she was trying to free Lem. She got whipped, and Joshua stopped it.
Lizzy grabbed Mr. Haynes' gun while Joshua fought him. Lem & Joshua told Lizzy to shoot Mr. Haynes, but she couldn't. Joshua tied up Mr. Haynes. Lizzy was forced to run away with Lem & Joshua.
They run away and run into a "Yankee" soldier camp. Lem and Joshua join the army. Lizzy joins them to cook and take care of them.

It talks about the culture of slavery during the Civil War that influenced U.S. society. It connects to the previous section because Mohamed was also a slave. So, there was still slavery going on. It talks about how blacks were treated to whites and there was some exceptions who doesn't always follow the whites.
